Die alte Straße menschenleer,
schleicht müde durch die Fichten.
Die Bäume schwanken hin und her
und raunen Waldgeschichten.

Die Meise piept, es klopft der Specht,
die Finken lustig schlagen,
im Schatten liegt der Köhlerknecht
und träumt von alten Tagen.

Es zieht heran ein brausend Sturm,
ein rasselnd Ungeheuer.
Der schwarze Turm ist gehüllt
in schwelend Qualm und Feuer.

Kein lockend‘ Schild im stillen Tann,
kein Krug umkränzt von Reben.
Die alte Straße selber kann,
nicht sterben und nicht leben.

Tief erschallts im Tannenwalde,
des Holles Scharr und Leite.
Nebelverschlungen liegt sie dort,
die verträumte alte Heide.
In der Ferne tönt es froh,
es scheint die alte Weise,
gleicht einem Bilde - licht und bunt.
